WHO downplays hantavirus cluster, rules out new COVID-like pandemic
Original: WHO says suspected hantavirus cluster 'is not the start of a COVID pandemic'
The World Health Organization has addressed a suspected cluster of hantavirus cases, stating it is not the start of a new pandemic similar to COVID-19. The remarks were aimed at calming concern after reports of the cluster circulated, with the WHO seeking to distinguish hantavirus, a rodent-borne virus, from the early days of the coronavirus outbreak.
Why now: Memories of the COVID-19 pandemic make any reports of a new virus cluster a source of immediate public concern.
