NBA shuts its only Africa training academy
Original: NBA closes sole Africa training academy in blow to young players https://www. aljazeera.com/sports/2026/10/2 /nba-closes
The NBA has closed its Basketball Africa League training academy, the league's sole player-development facility in Africa, disappointing young players and coaches across the continent. The league says its focus is shifting to a new global academy opening in Abu Dhabi, along with plans involving Mexico. Critics say the decision undercuts the NBA's years of investment in African basketball talent.
Why now: The closure affects aspiring African players' pathways to professional basketball and reverses the NBA's expansion strategy on the continent.
