New York governor names attorney general special prosecutor in Cornell rape case
Original: New York governor names AG as special prosecutor in alleged rape case at Cornell https://www.npr.org/2026/10/02/nx-s1-59
New York's governor has appointed the state attorney general as special prosecutor in an alleged rape case at Cornell University. The move puts the state's top legal office in charge of the prosecution, a step typically taken to avoid conflicts of interest with local prosecutors. The appointment drew attention given the case's high-profile campus setting and the involvement of two of the state's most prominent officials.
Why now: The unusual appointment of the attorney general to handle a campus sexual assault case is newsworthy and politically sensitive.
