Egypt and Ethiopia expel diplomats in tit-for-tat row
Original: Egypt and Ethiopia expel diplomats in tit-for-tat diplomatic row
Egypt and Ethiopia have expelled each other's diplomats in a reciprocal diplomatic dispute, sharply worsening relations between the two Nile basin countries. The tit-for-tat move comes amid long-standing tensions, particularly over Ethiopia's Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Cairo's concerns about its water security. The expulsions mark one of the most serious downturns in bilateral ties in recent years.
Why now: A rare public breakdown in relations between two major African states with ongoing disputes over the Nile dam has drawn wide attention.
