The mayor of Beppu, Japan, who became the country's first sitting mayor to take maternity leave, has been named to TIME's TIME100 Next list recognising emerging leaders. She drew wide attention in Japan for taking leave while in office, a landmark move in a country where politicians balancing pregnancy and public office remain rare.
Why now: Her inclusion on the TIME100 Next list is fresh news and her maternity leave was a landmark for women in Japanese politics.
