Prado and Rijksmuseum launch joint research on women rulers' impact on art
Original: Matronage over patronage: the Prado and Rijksmuseum team up to research women rulers’ impact on art
The Prado in Madrid and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam are collaborating on a research project examining how female monarchs shaped art history. Framed as 'matronage over patronage', the initiative will study how women rulers commissioned, collected and influenced artistic production in their courts. The partnership signals growing institutional attention to women's long-overlooked role as artistic patrons and power brokers in Europe.
Why now: Museums are increasingly re-examining art history through the lens of women's agency and patronage.
