Berliners are using Gieß den Kiez, an open-source app mapping the city's street trees, to find and water those most in need during hot, dry weather. The tool lets residents 'adopt' trees and monitor their condition, an approach compared to caring for a pet. As European heatwaves stress urban greenery, other heat-stricken cities are eyeing the model for their own tree-planting programmes.

Why now: Ongoing heatwaves are putting urban trees under strain, making citizen-led watering efforts timely.
