Sudan's ex-ruler Omar al-Bashir seeks treatment abroad
Original: Sudan's jailed former ruler Omar al-Bashir seeks treatment abroad, says lawyer
Omar al-Bashir, Sudan's jailed former president, has asked to travel abroad for medical treatment, according to his lawyer. The ousted ruler, who has been held in Sudan since being removed from power in 2019, faces charges connected to his 30 years in office, including over the Darfur conflict. The request comes as Sudan remains gripped by a devastating war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Why now: People are following the fate of the deposed dictator while Sudan's civil war keeps the country in the headlines.
