How to warn people 10,000 years from now about nuclear waste
Original: Long-term nuclear waste warning messages
A debate has resurfaced over how to warn future civilizations about buried nuclear waste, with timescales stretching 10,000 years or more. Proposed ideas range from hostile architecture and ominous earthen monuments to written warnings in multiple languages and even attempts to create new legends. Critics argue no message can reliably survive so long, while others point to real projects like the proposed markers at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico.
Why now: Renewed interest in nuclear energy and long-term waste storage has put the problem of communicating danger across millennia back into public discussion.
