Ukraine Draft Dodgers Defended in Times Opinion Piece
Original: Opinion | My Friend Is a Draft Dodger in Ukraine. He’s Not a Coward.
A New York Times opinion column argues that a Ukrainian man avoiding conscription should not be labelled a coward. The author says the friend's decision reflects fear and a personal choice rather than a lack of patriotism, reigniting debate over Ukraine's mobilisation practices and the pressure on men to serve as the war with Russia drags on.
Why now: Ukraine's ongoing mobilisation of men is a sensitive topic, and the piece challenges the assumption that avoiding the draft is shameful.
