US Slams Russia and China Veto on Iran Sanctions at UN
Original: Remarks at a UN General Assembly Meeting on Russia’s and China’s Use of Veto of a UN Security Council Resolution on Iran Sanctions
The United States addressed a UN General Assembly meeting after Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have imposed sanctions on Iran. Washington used the remarks to criticize the two permanent Security Council members for blocking the measure, reopening debate over Iran's compliance with nuclear limits and the Council's ability to act.
Why now: The rare double veto by two permanent Security Council members over Iran sanctions has triggered diplomatic backlash and renewed scrutiny of UN decision-making.
