Downing Street says Manchester City not above Premier League rules

Original: the sun

Downing Street has said Manchester City are not 'above the rules' after backlash to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham's remarks about the club's dispute with the Premier League. Burnham had suggested the Premier League should settle its financial rules case with City. The Prime Minister's spokesperson stressed that no club is exempt from football's regulations, prompting wide debate about political interference in sport.

Why now: Comments by a senior Labour politician on the Manchester City case drew government pushback and public attention.
