New York Governor Kathy Hochul has named state Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in an alleged rape case at Cornell University. The unusual move assigns the state's top legal office to the investigation, and the decision is drawing attention given both officials' prominence and the sensitivity of a campus criminal case.

Why now: The appointment of a sitting attorney general as special prosecutor in a high-profile campus sexual assault case is an unusual escalation.
