New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed state Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in the Cornell rape case, according to a New York Times report. The move puts one of the state's most prominent legal figures directly in charge of the prosecution, drawing attention given James's high profile and the case's connection to Cornell University.

Why now: The appointment of a high-profile attorney general as special prosecutor in a sensitive campus case is newsworthy political and legal news.
