Ballard says secretary of state's office should stay out of politics
Original: Ballard wants secretary of state's office 'out of politics.' His opponents see a problem
Ballard is calling for the secretary of state's office to be kept 'out of politics,' but his opponents argue his own conduct undermines that claim and say the position has become too politicized. The dispute is feeding into an ongoing campaign fight over how the office should be run and who can be trusted to keep it impartial.
Why now: The remarks come amid an active election contest in which opponents are using his statement to attack his credibility.
