Trump says he is 'looking at' US military base in Venezuela

Original: Trump says he’s ‘looking at’ opening US military base in Venezuela

President Donald Trump said the United States is 'looking at' opening a military base in Venezuela, a statement reported by multiple US outlets including the Denver Gazette and Colorado Politics. The remarks signal a possible expansion of American military presence in the South American country, where tensions with the government of Nicolás Maduro have already been running high amid US military activity in the Caribbean region.

Why now: Tensions between Washington and Caracas are already elevated, and the suggestion of a US base on Venezuelan soil marks a major potential escalation.
