Eritrea shuts Ethiopian embassy, expels 10 diplomats
Original: Ethiopia: Embassy shut in Eritrea, 10 diplomats expelled
Eritrea has ordered the closure of the Ethiopian embassy in Asmara and expelled 10 Ethiopian diplomats, escalating a sudden rupture between the two neighbours. The move comes despite the two countries having grown closer since the 2018 peace deal that ended their two-year border war. Neither government has publicly detailed the reasons behind the expulsions, and Addis Ababa has yet to announce a formal response.
Why now: A sudden diplomatic break between Ethiopia and Eritrea threatens to undo years of rapprochement in the Horn of Africa.
