Canada is moving to fast-track a Pacific coast oil pipeline from Alberta, a project aimed at reducing the country's reliance on exporting oil through the United States. The plan, associated with Prime Minister Mark Carney, seeks to open new export routes to Asian markets. The proposal has drawn attention because of its implications for US-Canada trade relations and its potential environmental impact.
Why now: Tensions with the United States over trade and energy have pushed Canada to seek alternatives to US export routes.
