Ségolène Royal back in the French spotlight
Original: segolene royale
Ségolène Royal, the former French minister and 2007 presidential candidate, is trending in France. Commentary linked to her name includes pointed debate over French identity and citizenship, with journalist Ève Szeftel arguing that French Jewish citizens must not be marked as outsiders, a symbolic reference to the yellow star. The discussion touches on antisemitism and the place of Jews in French public life, issues that have intensified amid recent political tensions.
Why now: Royal's name is drawing attention as debate resurfaces over antisemitism and the treatment of Jewish citizens in France.
