Representative María Elvira Salazar, a Cuban-American Republican from Florida, is being accused of shifting her stance on mass deportations as her re-election campaign approaches. A short news report from the outlet Belly of the Beast criticises her earlier backing of tough deportation policies, arguing she has softened her position to appeal to Cuban-American and other Latino voters in her Miami-area district who fear family separations.
Why now: Immigration policy is a sensitive issue among Cuban-American voters in Florida, and her apparent repositioning ahead of the election is drawing scrutiny.
