Gérard Larcher has been re-elected president of the French Senate in the first round of voting, winning 203 of the 302 votes cast. The announcement was met with a long ovation in the chamber. Why now: The French Senate has just held its presidential election and Larcher's first-round win confirms the right's dominance there.
