Canada fast-tracks Pacific oil pipeline to cut US reliance
Original: Canada fast-tracks Pacific oil pipeline to reduce US dependence
Canada is moving to fast-track a pipeline to the Pacific coast that would carry Alberta oil to Asian markets, reducing the country's dependence on exporting crude almost entirely through the United States. The push, associated with Prime Minister Mark Carney, comes as trade tensions with Washington sharpen interest in opening new export routes for Canadian energy.
Why now: Ongoing US-Canada trade friction has made diversifying oil exports away from the US a live political priority.
