Carney designates West Coast oil pipeline project
Original: Carney designates West Coast oil pipeline
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has designated a West Coast oil pipeline, moving the project into a fast-track approval process. The decision ties into his government's push to diversify Canada's energy exports beyond the United States, including toward Asian markets. Supporters frame it as nation-building, while Indigenous groups and environmental critics oppose expanded tanker traffic on the coast.
Why now: The federal designation is a major, contentious energy policy move with political and environmental stakes in Canada.
