Original: Putin on nuclear weapons: If a gun is hanging on the stage, sooner or later it must go off.
Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning about nuclear weapons, saying that if a gun is hanging on the stage, sooner or later it must go off. The remark, invoking the classic Chekhov's gun principle, is being read as a pointed signal about Russia's willingness to use its nuclear arsenal amid the ongoing confrontation with the West.
Why now: Putin's nuclear rhetoric is escalating concerns about the war in Ukraine and possible use of atomic weapons.
