Russia expels Hungarian diplomats amid Budapest's political shift
Original: Russia expels Hungarian diplomats as Budapest breaks with Orbán era
Russia has expelled Hungarian diplomats, according to Euronews, in a move reported alongside signs that Budapest is breaking from the long-standing pro-Kremlin posture of the Orbán era. The expulsions mark a sharp deterioration in ties that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had carefully cultivated with Moscow, and come as Hungary's political direction shows signs of change.
Why now: A diplomatic rupture between Russia and one of its closest EU partners signals a major shift in European politics.
