Bosnian Serb war criminal Biljana Plavsic dies at 96

Original: biljana plavsic

Biljana Plavsic, the former Bosnian Serb leader known as the 'Iron Lady', has died at the age of 96. She was convicted by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague for her role in atrocities committed during the Bosnian war of the 1990s, and later served part of her sentence before being released. Her death revokes attention to the Bosnian war and its legacy of contested memories.

Why now: News of her death has just broken, prompting renewed discussion of her war crimes conviction and Bosnia's wartime past.
