Southern France is experiencing severe flooding after up to 384.1 litres of rain per square metre fell in 24 hours. Rivers have burst their banks and towns have been left under water, with flooding reported across the affected areas. Forecasts had feared the storms would move deeper into the country, but they remained concentrated in the south.
Why now: The extreme volume of rainfall in a single day and widespread flooding in southern France are drawing attention.
