Andy Burnham pushes socialist reform agenda
Original: Andy Burnham pushes socialist reforms
Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, is pressing a socialist programme of reforms, renewing speculation about his ambitions to lead Labour from the left. Supporters see him as offering a bolder economic alternative to the government, while critics within the party warn his positions could deepen internal divisions. The push is drawing debate about Labour's direction ahead of future elections.
Why now: Burnham is a prominent potential leadership challenger, so any leftward policy push fuels speculation about his intentions and Labour's direction.
