Latvia open to hosting nuclear weapons under NATO decision
Original: Latvia could host nuclear weapons if NATO collectively approves deployment
Latvia says it could host nuclear weapons on its territory if NATO as a whole approves such a deployment. The statement from the Baltic state underscores growing debate within the alliance about forward-based deterrence on its eastern flank amid tensions with Russia, while stressing that any decision would require collective NATO approval rather than a national move alone.
Why now: Rising security concerns on NATO's eastern flank amid the war in Ukraine have put nuclear sharing and forward deployments back on the agenda.
