ICES advises 174,000 tonnes of mackerel as quotas set far higher

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea has recommended a 2026 mackerel catch of around 174,000 tonnes, only about 18 percent above last year's landed volume. Coastal states, however, have jointly set their quotas at 300,000 tonnes, well above the scientific advice. The gap is drawing attention in Faroese fisheries circles, where mackerel shares are economically significant.
Why now: Coastal states have again set mackerel quotas far above ICES scientific advice, a recurring fisheries dispute.
