Wildfires driven by El Niño are overwhelming Indonesia's orangutan population, with rescuers describing severe injuries among rescued animals. One mother, named Mama Abu, suffered peeling hands from walking on scorched ground while her eight-month-old baby, Abu, was found dehydrated and emaciated. Conservationists say the toll on the endangered great apes is enormous as habitat burns and survivors are left starving and displaced.
Why now: Ongoing El Niño-fuelled wildfires in Indonesia are causing a visible animal welfare and conservation crisis, drawing widespread concern.
