Colossal squid filmed alive in the wild for first time
Original: First-ever colossal squid captured on video | What scientists say it reveals
Scientists have captured the first footage of a colossal squid in its natural habitat, filmed near the South Sandwich Islands in the Southern Ocean. The animal, recorded by a remote camera at a depth of around 600 metres, was a juvenile about 30 centimetres long and nearly transparent. Adults can grow up to 7 metres and weigh around 500 kilograms. Researchers say the footage helps confirm how the species lives in the wild, decades after it was first identified in 1925.
Why now: It is the first time the world's largest invertebrate has ever been seen alive on video, a major milestone for deep-sea science.
