Harvest Moon rises over erupting Mount Etna in striking photo

Original: October 1, 2026 Rise of the Harvest Moon over the slopes of Mount Etna and the simultaneous play of colors in the anti-t

Astrophotographers are sharing a new image by Dario Giannobile showing the Harvest Moon rising over the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily on October 1, 2026, with the volcanic peak apparently erupting and colours playing across the anti-twilight arch, or Belt of Venus. The shot pairs the full moon closest to the autumn equinox with one of Europe's most active volcanoes, and commentary notes the rare combination of lunar and volcanic spectacle in a single frame.

Why now: The image captures a rare combination of the Harvest Moon and an active Etna eruption, making it widely shared among sky-watchers.
