Tennessee execution of Christa Pike halted, witnesses say
Original: pike
Tennessee has halted the execution of death-row inmate Christa Pike after witnesses reported she was still alive and appeared to be snoring during the procedure. The unusual accounts of the halted execution have drawn national attention and raised fresh questions about the state's lethal injection protocol. Pike's case, one of the few involving a female death-row inmate in Tennessee, has long drawn public interest, and the abrupt stop has intensified scrutiny from lawyers and commentators.
Why now: Reports that the inmate was apparently still alive mid-execution shocked the public and raised doubts about Tennessee's execution procedures.
