Five Democracy Advocates Targeted for Seeking Help Abroad
Original: Political Prisoners Watch: Five Democracy Advocates Targeted for Seeking Help Abroad
Freedom House reports that five democracy advocates have been designated political prisoners after they sought assistance from people or organisations outside their country. The watchdog says the charges or persecution against them stem directly from reaching out abroad for support, raising concerns about shrinking space for human rights defenders and international solidarity with pro-democracy activists.
Why now: A human rights watchdog has highlighted new cases of activists being punished for international outreach, drawing attention to repression of dissent.
