Kyiv Independent editor rejects propaganda despite reader anger at Russia
Original: Kyiv Independent editor: ‘Our readers want Russia to suffer but we can’t be propagandists’
An editor of the Kyiv Independent says the outlet faces constant tension between its readers' desire to see Russia punished for its invasion and its commitment to honest journalism. In remarks reported by The Guardian, she says readers want Russia to suffer, but the publication cannot allow itself to become propagandists and must maintain editorial standards while covering the war.
Why now: The war in Ukraine remains a leading global story, and a Ukrainian editor openly addressing the ethics of wartime coverage draws wide attention.
