UK prison early release scheme explained as inmates freed

The UK government's new early release scheme lets some prisoners in England and Wales walk free after serving 40% of their sentence instead of 50%, in an effort to ease severe prison overcrowding. The BBC explains how the scheme will work and how many inmates are expected to be freed. Justice officials say serious violent and sexual offenders are excluded, but critics warn public safety could be at risk and have called the move a sign of a failing prison system.
Why now: The first wave of releases under the scheme is imminent or underway, raising public concern about overcrowding and safety.
