Hegseth outlines new initiatives in address to US troops
Original: Hegseth details new initiatives in partisan address to troops
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has laid out a series of new initiatives during an address to US service members, but the speech drew criticism for its overtly partisan tone. Observers noted that sitting defense officials traditionally avoid political framing when speaking to troops, and the remarks are fueling debate over the politicization of the Pentagon and civilian control of the military.
Why now: A sitting defense secretary delivering what critics call a partisan political speech to troops breaks with longstanding norms, drawing wide attention.
