Tobacco Licensing Victoria has issued closure orders to 48 stores in the past fortnight, following raids in Melbourne's CBD, inner suburbs and the city's west. More than a dozen shops in the CBD alone have been shuttered as authorities crack down on illicit tobacco sales. Locals are welcoming the enforcement action, with some joking about illegal sales continuing in their own apartment buildings.

Why now: The scale of the closures, nearly 50 stores in two weeks, marks an unusually aggressive enforcement sweep against illicit tobacco trade in Victoria.
