US has more self-storage facilities than McDonald's locations

A widely shared statistic points out that the United States has more self-storage facilities than it does McDonald's restaurants — roughly 50,000 storage sites compared with about 13,500 Golden Arches. The comparison is prompting discussion about American consumer habits, overconsumption and the size of people's homes, with many commenting on what it says about how much stuff people own but don't use.
Why now: The striking comparison between storage units and a familiar fast-food chain makes an eye-opening point about American consumerism and real estate.
