Iraqis divided as US military withdrawal begins
Original: Joy, fear in Iraq as US military leaves
The US military is leaving Iraq, and reactions on the ground are split. Some Iraqis celebrate the end of more than two decades of American military presence, viewing it as a restoration of sovereignty. Others fear a security vacuum that could empower militias, enable Islamic State remnants to regroup, or draw Iraq back into regional conflict as the withdrawal proceeds.
Why now: The withdrawal marks a major shift in Iraq's security landscape, prompting a national debate over whether it brings independence or danger.
