Original: Culture Under Fire: Ukraine’s Fight Against Russia’s Campaign of Erasure
Attention is on Russia's targeting of Ukrainian cultural heritage alongside its military campaign. Reports describe the destruction or damage of museums, churches, monuments and historic sites across Ukraine, which officials and analysts frame as a deliberate effort to erase Ukrainian identity and history. The issue has drawn concern from heritage organisations and continues to fuel debate about cultural genocide and accountability for damage to cultural property.
Why now: Ongoing Russian strikes and occupation continue to damage or destroy Ukrainian cultural sites, keeping the debate about cultural erasure in the news.
