Ovechkin's Putin Ties Condemned in Washington Post Opinion
Original: Opinion | Alexander Ovechkin advertises Putin’s evil on American ice
A Washington Post opinion piece argues that Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin continues to promote Vladimir Putin's image and agenda while playing professional hockey in the United States. The column criticises Ovechkin's long-standing public support for the Russian president, including his involvement with the Putin Team movement, and questions whether American sports fans and the NHL should keep platforming him amid Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
Why now: The piece reignites debate over whether Russian athletes close to Putin should face consequences while working in the West during the war in Ukraine.
