Hawaiian canoe navigates by sun, moon and stars on global mission
Original: This Hawaiian canoe navigates by the sun, moon and stars. What its mission says about global diplomacy
A traditional Hawaiian voyaging canoe is sailing using only celestial navigation — reading the sun, moon and stars rather than modern instruments. Commentators say the voyage carries a diplomatic message, highlighting indigenous knowledge, environmental stewardship and cross-cultural connection as the crew travels beyond Hawaiian waters to meet communities around the world.
Why now: The canoe's blend of traditional navigation and international outreach is being framed as a symbol of soft power and cultural diplomacy.
