A new review of the anime film "Chiikawa: Secret of the Mermaid Island" argues that beneath its cute characters the story is rooted in traditional Japanese folklore. The reviewer, describing themselves as a fresh convert to the franchise, shared their impressions and rating of the movie, framing it as a folktale hidden behind an adorable surface.

Why now: The Chiikawa franchise is hugely popular in Japan, so new takes on its first feature film draw attention.
