Egyptian security services have arrested an entire newsroom within a 24-hour period, according to reporting by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project. The mass detention of a full editorial staff marks an escalation in pressure on independent media in Egypt, and press freedom advocates are highlighting the case as evidence of shrinking space for journalism in the country.

Why now: The unprecedented mass arrest of a whole newsroom raises urgent press freedom concerns and is drawing international attention to Egypt's treatment of journalists.
