Original: Wildlife officials kill 14 food-conditioned bears gathering at a home near Bozeman
Montana wildlife officials have killed 14 bears that had become food-conditioned and were repeatedly gathering at a residence near Bozeman. The action follows the animals losing their natural wariness of people after obtaining food rewards, which officials say made them a public safety risk. The scale of the killing is drawing attention and debate over how such conflicts with wildlife should be managed.
Why now: The unusually large number of bears killed in one action is prompting discussion about wildlife management and human food practices.
