Singapore has launched a government-run dating app aimed at public employees, using a Nobel Prize-winning matching algorithm to pair singles. The move comes as the country's birth rates hit record lows, making demographic decline an urgent policy concern. Observers are reacting to the unusual step of the state directly involving itself in matchmaking for its workforce, with debate over whether it will meaningfully help reversing the trend.
Why now: Singapore's record-low birth rates have made drastic pro-natalist measures a hot topic, and a state-run dating app is a striking novelty.
