MI5 has issued an espionage alert accusing the China General Technology Research Institute of using British academics to spy on UK artificial intelligence research. The security service says the institute has very strong ties to China's Ministry of State Security, its civilian intelligence agency. The alert warns universities and researchers about the risk of sensitive AI knowledge being transferred to Chinese state-linked bodies through academic collaboration.

Why now: Fresh allegations of Chinese state espionage targeting British AI research through universities are highly newsworthy amid ongoing UK-China tensions.
