Iran claims victory as US winds down Iraq mission
Original: Iran claims victory after US ends its mission in Iraq
Iranian officials are presenting the United States' announced end to its mission in Iraq as a win for Tehran and the militias aligned with it. The American presence, which shifted to an advisory role after the defeat of the Islamic State, has been a flashpoint for years, with Iranian-backed groups demanding a full withdrawal. Iraq now faces the task of managing the transition while keeping ties with both Washington and Tehran.
Why now: The US drawdown in Iraq reshapes the balance of power in the region and hands Iran a symbolic win, drawing wide attention.
